World Series of Poker

WSOP, the abbreviation of World Series of Poker has become a high profile tournament these days, which takes place in Las Vegas. It was organized in 1970 for the first time with only seven players. Later on when it started satellite tournaments, it attracted more than 50 people.

Within fifteen years, the number of people crossed two thousand. After that, television channels like ESPN started giving exclusive coverage to the fans about the events and the information about the winners and performers. The Discovery Channel started giving coverage from 2001, but ESPN took over the reign once again, as poker was emerging as a phenomenon.

At this point of time, the importance of poker as a high profile game was reduced. ESPN started to struggle hard to keep the royalty of the game, but somehow it did not clicked. In 2006, the tournament witnessed total participant of more than 8700.

Increase in the use of Internet started changing the ambience of this tournament. It started to become accessible to more number of people than it was earlier. People from all over the world started to play online poker and it created a big sensation among the players as well as the viewers. Several players participated in the tournament and got worldwide fame with their unsurpassable success.

The WSOP of Las Vegas is one of the biggest poker tournaments of the world. The television broadcast with glass tables and video cameras under the table allowed the fans to view the hole cards. The behavior of players and the betting patterns made this tournament the most popular among both poker fans as well as general people.
